The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Goa Customs at Dabolim airport seized foreign currency worth about Rs 39 lakh from two passengers at Dabolim airport on Tuesday evening.
According to a press note, the Customs officials while performing their duty, on the basis of intelligence developed by them, intercepted two international passengers, at Departure Hall. The passengers were to travel to Sharjah by Air Arabia flight.
Sources said the officials conducted search of the baggage carried by the two passengers and recovered foreign currency, worth about Rs 39 lakh. The passengers had concealed the currency in the gap between the inner layer and outer layer of the backpacks. The currency was seized under the provisions of Customs Act 1962.
The seizure has been made by the Air Intelligence team of Goa Customs under the supervision of G B Santimano, Additional Commissioner of Customs, Goa, and overall guidance of R Manohar, Commissioner of Customs, Goa. Further investigation is in progress.
The press note released by R Manohar, Commissioner of Customs, Goa, further stated that in the past 3 months, the Customs officers of the Goa International Airport have made 4 cases of gold smuggling in which 4.6 kgs of gold valued at Rs 142 lakh has been seized and also booked a case of smuggling of 5 kgs of narcotic substance ‘Ganja'.
